    How the split works

    1. Fair share in hours. All open hours are split in proportion to what each person can give per week. Someone with 8 hours a week gets twice the share of someone with 4.
    2. On-site tasks first. Tours, sorting the house, setting up the apartment and move-in day go to people who live nearby, spread by who has the most room left.
    3. Everything else fills the gaps. Research, calls, quotes, paperwork, address changes and online orders go to whoever is furthest below their fair share, which is often the sibling who lives far away.

    Tips for the conversation

    • Talk in hours, not in feelings. "I have 30 hours of tasks, you have 6" is easier to hear than "I do everything."
    • Distance isn't a pass. A sibling far away can still own the paperwork, the movers and the weekly check-in call.
    • Fair isn't equal. Someone caring for small children or working nights may give fewer hours. That's fine if it's said out loud.
    • Money counts too. Paying for movers or a clean-out service is a contribution. Write down who paid what.
    • Re-check weekly. Plans change. A 15-minute check-in once a week keeps the split honest.

    How does the splitter decide what's fair?

    It adds up the estimated hours of the tasks you picked and splits them in proportion to the hours each person said they can give per week. Tasks that need someone on site only go to people who live nearby. Everything else is shared by whoever has the most room left.

    What if nobody lives near our parent?

    The splitter still assigns on-site tasks, but marks them. That is usually the moment to plan trips in advance or to get quotes for help, for example from a senior move manager.

    Is what I type saved anywhere?

    No. The tool runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to us or stored. If you use 'Copy link', the names and choices are put into the link itself, so only people you send it to can see them.

    Where do the hour estimates come from?

    They are rough estimates from the tasks in our 60-day plan. Every family is different; use them to start the conversation, then adjust.
